How to Prepare a Clearly Fictional Document Mockup

Document-style mockups can demonstrate typography, layout and print effects in a portfolio. Their fictional status should be clear at a glance.

Start with an imaginary brief

Invent an organization and visual system. Use placeholder names rather than anyone’s real personal details. Avoid copying official seals, signatures or numbering systems.

Label every view

Place a prominent “SPECIMEN” or “FICTIONAL PROP” mark on the artwork and close-up images. Check that the mark remains visible in thumbnails and mobile previews.

Show your process

Include color studies, typography choices and layout sketches. These explain the creative decisions behind the mockup.

Export for presentation

Keep a layered working copy and export a flattened preview. Review the final file for readable labels, invented sample information and consistent spacing.
